Why do we need gamification?

🎯 Goal: We want to encourage people to travel more sustainably in a fun and rewarding way.

Considering people’s main issue of adopting sustainable transportation, namely the intention-action gap(check details here), it is wise to support their good actions with positive and fun feedback so that they would love to take sustainable actions continuously.

Gamification has been approved as a solution. ‘Gamification’ applies ‘game mechanics’ to non-game contexts. Although the term ‘gamification’ is derived from the word ‘game’, it is not about entertainment. Instead, gamification makes use of game design elements to increase people’s motivation and engagement. While it is people’s intrinsic motivators that initially attract them to our product, extrinsic motivation keeps drawing them back. Gamification principles can help offer extrinsic motivation.

Game Overview

In order to apply gamification principles(check more details here), we took validated examples like Stepn and Ant Forest as the starting point. The basic rules of how people engage in MobiFi were designed as shown in the figure above. Just like how users may do in other role playing games, in MobiFi, users need to do certain activities in order to achieve their goals in MobiFi.

The goal of users is simple: to earn as many points as possible in order to get more rewards.

To earn rewards, users need to play different roles/characters to collect points by travelling. To encourage users become more sustainable, they need to travel with sustainable transportations, by which they can collect ‘Greenz’— the numerical credits of their progress. When they reach certain amount of Greenz, they can unlock rewards of MoFi and badges. The MoFi can be used to level up their current character NFT’s attribute or to buy new one in market place. The badges are utility NFT that can be used in real life, such as coupons.

The total amount of greenz accumulated by all players in one city will contribute to the Green scores of the city. And there will be a leaderboard for rankings of cities. This will motivate people to use more and invite more friends/neighbors to join.

Story background

Greenz is scattered around the cities and can only be hunted while you travel with more sustainable means. Once enough Greenz are collected, you will get rewarded with earn real money and benefits.

Greenz Hunting is not only a journey for collecting gems; it is also a journey for personal growth. Everyone in this Greenz Hunting game will become a better person by doing what they genuinely believe, like walking more for better health or taking more public transportation for less CO2 emission.

Alex is a busy commuter between home and work. Ze is fed up with the boring day-to-day journey and looking for a new change. Ze joins the Greenz Hunting game for a change in zir life.
